A virtual private network or VPN (acronym for "Virtual Private Network) is a networking technology that, through a process of encapsulation and encryption of data packets, allows to build an extension of the local network over an uncontrolled public network, such as Internet.

Common examples of use are the ability to connect two or more branches of a company using Internet as a link, to enable support team members to connect from its home to the computer center, or to allow a user to gain access to his home computer from a remote site, such as a hotel. All of this using the Internet infrastructure.

The data packets travel on the private network through a tunnel, defined in the public network. For remote access, VPN allows users to access their corporate network, assigning addresses of their remote network and privileges of this one, although the connection has been stablished through a public Internet access.
